I’ve been contemplating acquiring an AR-15 for a while, and have been going back and forth on whether I should buy a completed rifle off the shelf, have someone build one for me, or build one myself. As I started to do a little research on my options, I found that I was completely overloaded with information. The AR-15 platform is slightly more complex than the pistols I am accustomed to, there are so many options, so many parts, so many manufacturers, they are highly customizable, there is a huge range of price and quality, and of course, everyone out there has an opinion on what I should or shouldn’t be doing. It’s totally overwhelming, and I just didn’t know where to start.
Luckily, Josh Kehler, owner of Oregon Rifleworks (my favorite shop for anything firearms related) has offered to help me out. I really wanted to use this as a learning experience, so I’ve opted to build my AR-15 so that I can learn as much as possible as I go through the process. I’ll be doing a series of posts with Josh where we will be chatting in detail about each part that will be going into my AR-15 build. Josh will be helping me understand things I need to take into consideration when making decisions on parts, what the different options are, pros and cons, how to figure out what I want and need in a rifle, and how to translate that into parts that will get me to the rifle that works best for me.
If you’re already very familiar with the AR-15 platform and you’ve built your own before, this might not be the series to take your knowledge to the next level… however, you may learn something new or gain a perspective that you hadn’t considered before. If you’re a newbie, like me, and you want to get into AR-15s or build your own and you simply don’t know where to start, you will be able to learn with me as I go. No matter your level of experience, I hope you’ll follow along and enjoy another aspect of my journey into firearms!
To get started, Josh and I will be chatting about barrels (rifle barrels, not wine barrels)! Check out the video below, and don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube Channel, where I’ll be sharing much more going forward.
Got any questions on what Josh and I discussed in the video? What kind of barrel did you go for on your build? Let me know in the comments below!
